The Hawai'i Psychological Association, in cooperation with the American Psychological Association, is pleased to announce the winners of the fifth annual Healthy Workplace Awards to promote psychological health in the workplace. The statewide awards recognize excellence in five types of organizations: Non-profit organization, Government agency; Military unit; Small business and Large business.
Chartered in 1962, the Hawai'i Psychological Association is the professional association representing over 300 Hawai`i psychologists. Its mission is to advance the science and practice of psychology while supporting excellence in education, training, research, advocacy and service. HPA's parent group, the American Psychological Association, has an active membership of over 86,000, making it one of the largest professional associations in the United States.
The link between worker satisfaction with the work environment and increased productivity is clear. With more than 60 percent of workplace absences related to psychological problems and more than 90 percent of all accidents caused by personal and stress-related problems, a healthy workplace is everybody's business.
It is one of HPA's goals to make each workplace safe, secure and healthy for all. Awards criteria cover five major areas: Health; Safety and Security; Employee Involvement; Career Development; Family Support; and Community Service and here is a summary of many of the "Best Practices" we discovered. These awards are another step in creating awareness of what excellence in the workplace looks like, establishing objective criteria based on sound research, and recognizing great companies to work for in Hawai'i.
