The Psychologically Healthy Workplace

Aloha Pacific Federal Credit Union

2009 Award Winner: Non-profit Category

The Aloha Pacific Federal Credit Union was founded in 1936 and is the third largest credit union in the State. As the Director of Human Services stated, “We literally get paid to help people.”

They have a certified trainer/nutritionist to coach employees. All employees, regardless of level in the

organization, have an active voice in decisions through special committees including the “Hiki No” (can do attitude) Committee, a non-manager’s committee that had 29 of 66 suggestions implemented last year alone. There is even a “Gen X” committee, which is charged to meet and provide suggestions specific for that generations’ employees.

  • 100% tuition is paid for undergraduate and graduate classes.

  • Professional memberships and association dues are paid by the organization.

  • Communication is critical and to keep in touch, there are monthly personal video messages made by the president. Additionally, all events are videotaped and available for employee viewing at any time on their Kalaconnect Site.

  • To make sure new employees get it, new hire orientation is 8 days long and includes visits to all branches and lunch with other employees.

  • There are holiday decoration competitions between branches that get somewhat serious.

  • At Aloha Pacific FCU every employee is a member of the bonus structure system and all employees know the company’s financial status via their intranet site.
